How do I cope with big changes in my life?
Life can bring about many changes and how you cope may depend on a few factors.
Some important questions to consider asking yourself might be:
Was the change planned or unexpected?
How is this change making you feel?
How does this change affect your life?
Do you have support through this change?
Ways to cope with big life changes:
Create certainty -Make plans to create predictability and certainty (and to have fun of course). Hang out with a friend, plan a date night, or go do something you enjoy.
Keep routines - Life may have changed and it is important to keep as much of your routine the same as possible. We like to have an idea of what we’re doing.
Take steps - Break bigger tasks or goals into smaller, attainable steps.
Seek support - Getting support can look different. It could mean talking to friends and family, joining a support group, going to therapy.
Feel - Let yourself feel however you do. You don’t ‘have’ to feel a certain way or ‘should’ feel a certain way.
Healthy coping - Use healthy coping skills for when you feel certain emotions. Maybe walking helps you stay grounded, working out releases anger or stress, journaling helps you process emotions, watching a familiar show makes you feel safe and cozy.
Focus on what you can control - When life brings big change, we can feel out of control. It is helpful to remind yourself what is in your control and what you are capable of doing something about.
