How do I know if I have a substance abuse problem?

In order to know if you have a substance abuse problem, I think it depends how you define a substance abuse problem. If we go by the classic diagnostic manual, or by the CDC, or by what your friend thinks or what you think, it’s all different. Below are some signs of substance abuse problems from a mental health lens.

Signs you may have a substance abuse problem:

  • You continue using despite having repeated consequences

  • There have been legal consequences

  • You feel like you need to use in order to get through the day

  • You hide your use from friends and/or family

  • Your use has increased over time

  • Using substances is the main way you cope with stress

  • People in your life have mentioned feeling concerned or worried

  • Using substances has become financially draining
