Why am I feeling anxious?

Why am I feeling anxious?

Everyone experiences anxiety differently, so there could be a variety of reasons for what is causing you to feel anxious. Below are some common reasons that could be contributing to anxiety.

  • Relationship stress - Relationship dynamics can cause stress and anxiety at times, such as how you handle conflict, how you feel seen and valued, or how you function in daily life. There may also be other factors in your relationship that are causing anxiety such as communication problems, trust issues or infidelity, substance use, insecurity, or childhood wounds showing up.

  • Personal beliefs - Sometimes our own beliefs or eexpectations can cause us to feel anxious. Maybe you put pressure on yourself to be the best or perfect. Maybe you have a harsh inner voice and are often critical of yourself. Maybe life isn’t meeting your idea of expectations.

  • Work stress - Work can be overwhelming, demanding, and it takes up a good chunk of your life. Whether it is your work schedule, deadlines, projects, or feelings of inadequacy, anxiety can often spike due to the nature of work.

  • Substances - Using or abusing substances can often increase or create anxiety. You may be using substances to stop feeling anxious, however, consistent use of drugs or alcohol may actually make anxiety worse.

  • Direction/goals/Life - You may feel anxious due to your current life path. Maybe you’re in school and that’s stressful. Maybe you’re job is changing. Maybe you recently moved. Maybe you feel like you don’t have a clear path or you’re starting over.

There may be many other ‘reasons’ for why you are feeling anxious. Having self awareness to determine where you’re anxiety is coming from is helpful in understanding how to cope and manage.
